This is a very complicated issue and you can not reach a conclusion which is better and what is worse, we can not only be influenced by some bad proposals in terms of proprietary software or free software because not only is a the proposal are several some better than others. Sometimes the proprietary software is more reliable because it is the most used by people and we all know, one can say that is "standard" and sometimes people fear we dare not use anything but is the "standard", and that is what makes companies developing proprietary software to grow more and become market leaders.
FOSS is equally or more reliable than proprietary software and is not very difficult to use, sometimes that is one of our fears do not know which to use and we serve as the "standard" either one or the other has its advantages and disadvantages no going to be perfect and free software can be safer can also have less support for a landlord, free can be distributed freely and no owner, free can be a readily available tool for people who can not afford an owner.
